SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

Common symptoms of heel pain & plantar fasciitis

Heel pain and plantar fasciitis typically develop gradually and may feel worse in the morning or after periods of rest. Common symptoms include:

  • Sharp or stabbing pain in the heel, especially with the first steps in the morning
  • Pain that eases with movement but returns after long periods of standing or walking
  • Tenderness at the bottom of the heel or along the arch of the foot
  • Tightness in the Achilles tendon or calf muscles
  • Discomfort after exercise rather than during it
Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel pain and occurs when the plantar fascia becomes irritated or overloaded.

Early diagnosis and treatment are important to prevent the condition from becoming chronic.

How we can help you

  • A Neurological and vascular examination of the feet to rule out any underlying cause of the problem. Sometimes the pain can be emanating from the spine or indeed a result of poor circulation or systemic condition.
  • A thorough Musculoskeletal examination of your feet and lower limbs  to ascertain the possible mechanical causes of the pain.
  • Video Gait analysis to gain an understanding of how you move and identify any contributing factors. We also use this to help monitor your recovery and aid with re-educating you back to walking or running.
  • Manual therapy such as mobilisation, taping and soft tissue massage to facilitate the resolution of your pain.
  • Bespoke orthotics and a wide range of off the shelf insoles to aid a speedy recovery.
  • Footwear evaluation and advice to make sure you are in the best possible shoes and trainers to help you move on from your heel pain, and prevent mistakes in footwear choice that could prolong your problem or cause further problems in the future.
  • Access to one of our highly experienced colleagues to treat you as the person not just the presenting pain.  Be it further imaging from one of our consultants, diet advice from our dietician or exercise advice from our recommended strength and conditioning coaches we will look at you the person to facilitate your recovery to allow you to move on with your life again.
